Short-term planning is underway at Emporia’s Friendship Center as repairs have paused on a nearby water main break.
Part of the planning is done — and it means no Friendship Meals for Thursday. The Friendship Center, the home of Emporia’s North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, also cooks and delivers Friendship Meals to Lyon County seniors.
In addition, Manager Gwen Burenheide says commodity pickup will not take place Thursday. Pickup will be available from 9 am to 4 pm Friday.
Other operations for Thursday are to be determined.
Planning is needed because Emporia’s Underground Utilities crews will work between 7 am and 4 pm Thursday to finish what they started around 10 am Wednesday. The break was noted in the 10 block of West Logan, less than two blocks away from the Friendship Center. West Logan will be closed from South Commercial to South Congress during Thursday’s work.

Emporia’s Friendship Center is now without water service as the result of a water main break nearby.
The Friendship Center, 221 West Logan, is less than two blocks from a reported break in the 10 block of West Logan. Crews have been working to repair the break since around 10 am.
The Friendship Center is the location for Emporia’s North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging and the Friendship Meals program for seniors. Manager Gwen Burenheide says the facility made it through the lunchtime meal preparation and delivery period but went offline soon afterward.
West Logan is currently closed from South Merchant to South Commercial while repairs continue.
Noon Wednesday: Water main break under repair in south Emporia
Emporia’s Underground Utilities Department is handling a water main break in the south part of the city.
Crews were called out to the 10 block of West Logan around 10 am. The street was closed from South Merchant to South Commercial until repairs are completed.
The break apparently affects mainly residential customers. The Friendship Center, home of Emporia’s North Central Flint Hills Area on Aging office and the Friendship Meals program for Lyon County seniors, is not affected.
