Emporia State announced a three-year contract extension for head football coach Garin Higgins on Friday. The extension is the longest allowed by the Kansas Board of Regents for coaches outside of Division I. Higgins has amassed a 113-84 record at E-State and is three wins shy of tying Fran Welch for the program record. He is the winningest active coach in the MIAA and fifth in career wins in “The Association” and is in his 19th year as the Hornet head coach. Higgins is the only coach in program history to win 10 or more games more than once accomplishing the feat three times. Higgins said he loves coaching at his alma mater.
Higgins credited new athletic director Steve Rodecap for the deal getting done quickly.
Terms of the deal were not immediately released. ESU opens the season Thursday, August 28 against Minot State at Welch Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. Coverage will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Mix 104.9.
