A Lyons man convicted by a Lyon County jury of trying to kill a law enforcement officer was sentenced to life in prison — and wasted no time in appealing his sentence.
Adam Jay Hrabik received a life sentence after shooting Lyons Police Officer Cory Ryan several times as part of an incident in October 2020. Ryan suffered critical injuries before improving. Ryan was shot as he responded to Hrabik shooting Brian Friess, a former teacher and coach of Hrabik. Friess was seriously injured but also survived.
In late June, Hrabik was convicted of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault. Trial was moved from Rice County to Ellis County and again to Lyon County.
Hrabik’s defense attorney, Jason Smartt, is appealing numerous aspects of the case against his client — including the verdict and sentence, but also denial of certain motions and the trial itself. The Kansas Appellate Defender’s Office will represent Hrabik as the case moves forward.
