The recent 5-star rating for Emporia’s Hand in Hand Hospice through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has everything to do with the care provider’s high-quality staff.
That was the message from Hand in Hand Hospice Director Andrea Ellwood, a guest of KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment Wednesday.
According to Ellwood, the award is determined by a national survey known as CAPS, which measures several areas of the provider’s quality of care for patients.
The feedback in the survey is provided by families whose loved ones were cared for by Hand in Hand and other hospice providers. Knowing the recognition was made possible by those they serve made the honor all the more special for Ellwood and her staff.
Hospice can be an extremely taxing profession, both physically and mentally. When it comes to keeping up morale and the quality of care that patients have become accustomed to, Ellwood says she and her staff make sure they always “Practice what they preach.”
Now that the facility has achieved this rating, the highest possible through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Ellwood says the goal will be to continue improving, noting she and her staff never want to rest on their laurels.
