Investigators have concluded their work after an explosion in east Emporia killed two people earlier this summer.
Emporia Fire Marshal Stephen Beemer says an accidental natural gas explosion led o the untimely passing of Darrell and Terry Bontrager at their home at 1814 East Sixth in June. Beemer says the explosion happened inside the house.
Tuesday’s statement concludes a joint investigation involving Emporia Fire, Emporia Police and the Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal.
The explosion happened June 18, killing the Bontragers and leveling their home while leaving other nearby structures apparently intact.
Darrell Bontrager was a longtime postal carrier in and around Emporia, while Terry Bontrager spent nearly 20 years as an administrative assistant at KVOE before her retirement.
