Dow Wilson was already set to hand off his Chase County Treasurer duties to Bernice Albers at the end of next month after the 2025 primary election. Now he’s vacated his position well beforehand.
Wilson has resigned his post after Chase County commissioners approved a forensic audit last week as part of measures to investigate “lots of irregularities” that may date back to 2022, according to Chase County Attorney Brian Henderson at a commission meeting last week. The irregularities developed as part of annual audit work done by certified public accountant Cindy Jensen. Henderson says the potential irregularities amount to between $50,000 and $100,000 with no legal justification.
There is no word on how long it may take to complete the forensic audit.
Wilson had served as treasurer since 2017 before losing the primary election.
Replacing Wilson, at least for the short term, now falls on the Chase County Republican Committee. Chairperson Rebekah Green says there will be an official convention at 5:30 pm Sept. 15 at the Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls. The meeting is open to the public until voting, which takes place behind closed doors. Candidates must be nominated by a committee members. Green says Albers is eligible to be nominated, with all nominations going to Kansas Governor Laura Kelly for approval.
