This has been a busy summer at the David Traylor Zoo.
Social media Tuesday announced a new resident: Axl, a mini-Highland cow who is in Emporia after time at Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina. Axl enjoys sweet feed, alfalfa and carrots and spends his time playing with balls, barrels and brushes.
Axl — who turns one year old on Sept. 22 — is into his 30-day quarantine and is currently along Zoo Road near the emu flock, which came to the zoo earlier this summer as part of a private donation. The zoo says Axl will move to a larger grazing area once his quarantine is successfully completed. He will also join current livestock Bill, Beulah and Ted as the zoo continues to highlight the work of ranchers, farmers and conservationists restoring prairie lands and bison to their natural habitats.
Axl’s time in Emporia comes as the zoo is into the late stages of planning for its Zoo Brew: A Night in the Wild event at the zoo on Sept. 12. A catered dinner from Bobby D’s Merchant Street BBQ and drinks from Radius Brewing, Trolley House, Turquoise Tavern, Union Street Social and Mulready’s Pub will lead into live music from the Steve Kile Band. Tickets are available at $50 each.
Plans are also underway for the annual Boo in the Zoo event coming on Halloween.
