The Emporia State women’s soccer team had more opportunities but #14 Drury capitalized on one goal and that was enough for the Panthers to stave off the Lady Hornets 1-0 in each team’s season opener on Thursday night. ESU was outshot 11-10 but generated one more shot on goal than Drury, but ESU failed to clear the ball defensively and Drury scored just over 22 minutes into the match. Emporia State had plenty of chances with five corner kicks in the second half but the Panther netminder made seven saves to preserve the shutout. Forward Megan Kephart generated three shots with two on goal in her 70 minutes while Aver Zimmerman also put two shots on goal. Mackenzi Goen made five saves for the Black & Gold. E-State (0-1) stays in Springfield, Mo. to play Maryville Saturday with kickoff at noon.
