Emporia football started off the Daniel Goodman era of Spartans football with a spirited effort in a 24-14 loss to Pittsburg to start the season. Emporia fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter after a Spartans fumble on their opening series led to a 2-yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter for the Dragons.
Pittsburg had the ball in the final seconds of the second half and looked to make it a two-score game at halftime, before this happened.
The two point conversion failed and Pittsburg led 7-6 at halftime. Emporia’s defense got a 3-and-out and took the lead on this run.
The Spartans led 14-7 after the two point conversion early in the 3rd quarter, but after that Pittsburg rattled off 17 unanswered points to hold on 24-14. Emporia falls to 0-1 and travels to face Wichita West on Friday at 7.
