As work begins to replace the Welch Stadium scoreboard at Emporia State University, the city of Emporia is advising residents of some traffic adjustments on campus this month.
City Communications Manager Christine Torrens says a contractor will start removing the scoreboard Monday, closing 15th Avenue between Welch Stadium and the Morse Hall complex to allow for a crane and other equipment to access the site. The goal is to move the crane on weekends to allow traffic flow near the site, and overall work could last two weeks.
ESU is replacing the Dennis Shogren Scoreboard, which has been in place at the south end of the stadium since 2015. A temporary scoreboard is currently in place near the athletic department offices at the north end of the stadium, but that scoreboard will be replaced once the new scoreboard is installed.
ESU Associate Athletics Director and Head of Media Relations Don Weast says the goal is to have the new scoreboard in place by the Hornets’ home football game against Pittsburg State.
