The Emporia State soccer team took care of business on Opening Day at the ESU Pitch defeating UMary 3-1 on Friday to pick up their first win of the year. The Lady Hornets found the back of the net three times in the first half to lead 3-0 at the break. The Marauders answered just minutes into the second half but didn’t score again. Peyton Pipes scored first on a penalty kick before Madeline Bracy picked up a goal just minutes later. Hailey Gancarz scored with less than three minutes remaining in the first half. ESU outshot UMary 11-3 in the first frame and had three more shots on goal in the game. Head coach Jane Grimley-Gunn said the team had been focused on its offense in its recent practices.
Bracy said she thought the win would give the team confidence.
Emporia State (1-2) returns to the ESU Pitch on Sunday for a noon kickoff against Northern State.
