Strong City Mayor Lydia Simmons has resigned her post.
Simmons filed a letter with the city on Wednesday, saying her resignation is effective immediately. She has declined an interview with KVOE News at this time, but she says it was a decision made βin the best interest of both myself and the community at this time.β She also thanked city staffers for dedication, integrity and commitment, and she thanked city residents who supported her β first during her initial election in 2019 and since then.
Simmons was on the ballot for the general election in November, giving her an opportunity for a fourth term in office. The only candidate who filed for the post, she will remain on the ballot because her withdrawal comes after the June filing deadline.
City Council President Justin Garr now assumes the role of mayor, at least through the November election.
