The Emporia State volleyball team has won five straight after two more wins at the Washburn Invitational on Saturday in Topeka. They received their toughest test of the weekend in a five-set victory beating MSU-Moorhead 25-16, 22-25, 16-25, 25-19, 16-14. The Lady Hornets started well with a 9-3 run to end set one before dropping two sets in a row to the Dragons. ESU used an 8-1 run to take control of the fourth set before coming back from 10-6 down in the fifth to win it. Freshman Delainee Dexter had her first career triple-double with 18 kills, 21 assists, and 12 digs. She was matched by graduate Nyia Anderson’s 18 kills.
William Jewell provided little resistance in the second match as ESU took a leisurely 25-13, 25-11, 25-21 victory in their second match of the day. E-State ended the first and second set on identical 12-1 runs. The third set was more competitive but the Lady Hornets found another late groove scoring seven of the last nine points in the match. Dexter led the ESU offense with nine kills and was matched again by Anderson. Dexter’s triple-double was the first for the program since Yuchen Du in November 2018.
ESU (5-2) wraps up non-conference play at the MIAA-GAC Crossover next weekend with their first match Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
