Emporia residents — if you don’t have a fire or carbon monoxide alarm, or if yours doesn’t work, the Emporia Fire Department has an idea for you.
The Fire Department is partnering with Get Alarmed Kansas to offer both free alarms and “expert” installation for qualifying residents. Emporia Fire says residents qualify if they don’t have alarms, the current alarms don’t work or the alarms are at least 10 years old.
Interested residents can go online to emporiaks.gov/getalarmed to request an alarm or set up a home fire safety survey. The application includes basic information like name, address, phone number and email address, as well as information like whether residents own or rent, the number of bedrooms and levels in the home and number of current smoke detectors. There is also information requested for number of people under age 5 or over age 65 as well as whether any home residents are disabled.
There will be a confirmation email immediately, but residents may not get a follow-up from Emporia Fire until it’s time to schedule installations.
Fire Marshal Stephen Beemer will be KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 guest at 8:20 am Monday with an update.
