Eureka stands to benefit from a significant federal grant.
The Environmental Protection Agency has announced its latest Brownfields Grants, including a $2 million grant to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Of that money, an unspecified amount is going to Eureka for environmental site assessments and potential cleanup of a former horse racetrack, a former nursing home, Memorial Hall and the former Masonic Lodge. Sites adjacent to Eureka’s current fire department headquarters will also get funded as the city moves towards expanding that facility.
The Brownfields program offers both grants and technical assistance to cities, towns, states and tribes so they can assess potential cleanup projects, conduct projects safely and thus “sustainable reuse contaminated properties.”
