Construction may not be that far off, relatively speaking, for Southwick House.
Director Susan Brinkman has said she expects construction to begin early next year. She’s still holding to that general timetable.
The 9,000-square-foot facility at 115 East Logan will serve women and families, with 14 rooms and a self-contained non-congregate room for families. There will be over 40 available rooms. Brinkman says the facility will also serve people who qualify as “episodically homeless.”
Board Chair Jeremy Dorsey says having families in the fold makes sense with the effort no longer using the Plumb Place location.
In addition, Dorsey says there was a clear need to serve women in crisis situations when Southwick’s predecessor, Plumb Place, operated for a century before closing at the end of 2020. The need to serve women and families in crisis is evident now, even though the doors won’t open for over a year.
Tuesday’s interview on KVOE’s Morning Show comes as Southwick House continues fundraising with several recent successes, including donations and gifts of $50,000 from the Trusler Foundation, $15,000 from the KT Wiedemann Foundation and an anonymous $10,000 gift. Around $2.16 million has been donated or pledged. The goal is $3.6 million. Soulthwick House is getting ready for its annual Turkey Day Dash 5K fundraiser on Thanksgiving.
