Base rates are going up for Evergy customers after a decision from the Kansas Corporation Commission on Thursday.
The KCC voted unanimously to approve a settlement agreement giving Evergy authority to increase rates by $128 million, thus recovering costs and investments for replacing equipment and strengthening the utility’s power grid. Evergy had asked for authority to boost rates by over $196 million with its original application back in January.
The new rates begin next month. The KCC says residential customers with average monthly use of around 900 kilowatt hours will see an increase around $8.50 per month.
The decision was made after conversations and negotiations between KCC staff, the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board, Evergy and other stakeholders representing school districts, commercial customers and industrial customers.
