An Emporia woman accused of leading a chase that led to injuries for a Lyon County deputy has received probation after reaching a plea agreement in the case last month.
Kaitlyn Mundell was sentenced to 18 months probation and an underlying 11-month prison term at her sentencing Thursday.
Mundell had pleaded no contest to single counts of flee and elude and reckless aggravated battery after original counts including aggravated battery on law enforcement, interference with law enforcement, leaving the scene of an injury accident and criminal deprivation of a motor vehicle after a chase originating in Lyon County in late May. Mundell allegedly drove the pickup that led the chase, including a crash that sent Deputy Doug Stump briefly to Newman Regional Health for care and treatment.
Co-defendant Preston Ashburn had pleaded no contest to a count of methamphetamine possession after initially being charged with battery on and interference with law enforcement, as well as paraphernalia possession. However, at his sentencing hearing Aug. 4, Ashburn withdrew his plea — thus setting up a potential trial, perhaps as soon as Monday. Prosecutors have requested a delay because a witness will be unavailable. Jury trial could push to Oct. 14 or Oct. 20, depending on a decision from Judge Lee Fowler.
Separately, a man accused of leading a chase and aggravated child endangerment now has potential trial start dates in his case.
Gustavo Adolfo Lopez could see trial begin Nov, 17, Dec. 8 or Jan. 20, depending on a status hearing Nov. 12.
Lopez was charged after an alleged incident in mid-July. His current list of charges also includes interference with law enforcement, third-offense driving under the influence, speeding and other traffic counts.
