Time is starting to run short as candidates get ready for the general election in a few weeks, and you will have several chances to learn more about local candidates through a variety of means next month.
The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters Emporia Chapter will have a Candidate Forum at Flint Hills Technical College, 3301 West 18th, on Oct. 6. The forum will feature the candidates for Emporia City Commission, including incumbent Tyler Curtis and hopefuls Monica Duncan, Denise Gilligan, Travis Hitt, Aaron Larson, Don Loux, Tammi Ogle and Kurt Steinkuhler. It will also feature the technical candidates for USD 253 Emporia Board of Education, incumbents Lillian Lingenfelter and Jami Reever and newcomer Barb Fowler — who was named to the board after all open positions were filled with no additional candidates to trigger either a primary or general election.
Ken Weaver will moderate the forum, which will begin at 5:45 pm and will include opening remarks, responses to questions already submitted and a question-and-answer session if time allows.
Meanwhile, KVOE News has shifted away from its longstanding group-style Candidate Forums in favor of one-on-one Candidate Spotlights. These nearly-30-minute programs allow KVOE News to dive deeper into the main issues facing city residents and city government than the original format. Candidate Spotlights focus on this year’s City Commission candidates and will air in the 11 am hour Oct. 7, Oct. 9, Oct. 14 and Oct. 16 on KVOE and KVOE.com.
