With federal appropriation bills likely not getting finalized by the end of the government year this week, Kansas Congressman Derek Schmidt says it’s time to extend current budget plans into November.
Schmidt spoke about the budget during his monthly update on KVOE’s Morning Show. He says the House has passed a continuing resolution to ensure bills get paid and programs get funded. However, he says this CR is different than ones in the past.
The federal fiscal year begins Wednesday, while the state fiscal year begins July 1 and the city-county fiscal year begins Jan. 1. There have been comments from Democrats about not agreeing to the continuing resolutions, which could well shut down the federal government if differences are not addressed. Schmidt says he’s unclear about how serious those comments are, and he says similar discussions are mentioned at the end of every federal fiscal year. However, he says some demands include increased spending and restored eligibility requirements involving public service benefits for non-citizens.
