There wasn’t much in the way of damage, but Las Catrinas is closed until further notice after a small flash fire in the kitchen Sunday night.
Emporia Fire was called out to a gas leak and connected fire just after 10 pm. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says the staff was in the process of closing the kitchen as part of nightly shutdown chores. As they moved a gas-fueled cooktop, a gas line broke off and apparently found a nearby pilot light. A small flash fire ensued, largely put out by the restaurant’s hood system and staff.
Fuller says firefighters turned off the gas, ventilated the building and notified Kansas Gas. Nobody was hurt.
Fuller says the hood system needs to be reset and cleaned before Las Catrinas can reopen for business.
