The Walk to End Alzheimer’s event is coming up at the Lyon County Fairgrounds on Saturday. Registration and check-in for the walk will be at 8:45 a.m with a 9:45 opening ceremony and the walk beginning at 10 a.m. Caroline Blankey is the local walk manager of the Alzheimer’s Association and explains that it will be a family friendly event that will have fun activities that everyone can enjoy.
Alzheimer’s hits close to home for Blankey, as she lost her grandfather to the disease in the fall of 2023 and says that lit her desire to join the Alzheimer’s Association and to help spread awareness and help families like hers. She also explains that the opening ceremony will be a powerful part of the morning on Saturday, and how the theme of flowers of different colors will make a strong impact.
Blankey says that while there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, for the first time ever time treatments have become available that addresses the biology of the disease rather than just the symptoms. These treatments are most effective early on in the disease, making early diagnosis especially critical. Funds raised at the walk will go to furthering Alzheimer’s research and Blankley credits the community for their continued support in the cause.
