Orange cone season isn’t done just yet in Emporia.
Street resurfacing is underway on West 12th between Rural and Lincoln. This is the first part of a two-street, two-phase project. City Engineer Jim Ubert says Prairie will see resurfacing from Interstate 35 to 12th,.
Ubert says this is finishing up street work and reflects subgrade issues for both streets.
Prairie has had subgrade issues even before the year-long 24th and Prairie waterline replacement project that ended this past spring. The waterline installation along Prairie aggravated the subgrade issues. Ubert says there were similar subgrade issues along West 12th.
Ubert says milling work on West 12th will go through Thursday, with a 2-inch overlay starting as soon as milling is done. Milling will begin on Prairie shortly after it’s done on West 12th, and Ubert says Prairie will also have a 2-inch overlay. Lane shifts are already underway on 12th and will be coming to Prairie. Ubert says overall work will go through late October.
The city of Emporia has announced a separate and unrelated alley closure. The east alley at Fifth and Market has been closed by Kansas Gas as the utility installs a new pipe. There is no word on how long the alley will be closed.
