As the state’s water recreation season comes to an end, there was good news when it comes to local blue-green algae alerts.
The pond at Peter Pan Park, in an algae warning for several weeks, had the alert lifted by Kansas Department of Health and Environment late last week.
Emporia State University’s King Lake remains in an algae warning, while Melvern Outlet River Pond remains in an algae watch.
Algae warnings are issued when a harmful algae bloom is either confirmed or expected. Watches are announced when a bloom is possible and may be present. Algae blooms are harmful to people and can be lethal for animals, especially dogs and livestock.
The state’s water recreation season runs from April 1 to Halloween. The state’s Harmful Algae Bloom response program’s active operations also end on Halloween.
