Pregnancy loss and infancy loss can be hard topics to address years after it happens, but the goal of Wednesday night’s Wave of Light ceremony was comfort in the face of personal loss.
Ginny Samples, who lost four babies before birth, started her talk by referencing the lyrics of “Something in the Heavens” by Lewis Capaldi.
Samples says there is hope, even when it doesn’t feel OK to have that emotion.
Samples’ husband, Chuck, says personal tragedies like pregnancy loss can lead families into positive directions they may have not otherwise considered.
Newman Regional Health has organized the local Wave of Light ceremony for several years to join similar events worldwide. Wednesday’s event also included floating candles on the C of E Park pond and a video commemorating lives lost in pregnancy or infancy.
Research indicates anywhere from 10-30 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage. A much smaller percentage end in stillbirths, but over 20,000 babies in the US are stillborn every year.
