Advance voting is now underway inside the Lyon County Election Office for the next two weeks.
In-office advance voting began Monday and will continue weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm, leading up to the general election on November 4. During her latest appearance on KVOE’s Morning Show, County Election Officer Amie Jones stated the process for in-office voting is short and sweet.
For those wishing to cast their ballot at the courthouse, they will need to bring a valid state-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or a passport to be allowed to vote. The start of in-office voting follows the annual off-site voting event at the Lyon County Courthouse Annex held Saturday, which saw right around 70 individuals turn up and cast their ballots.
It also comes a week before another important deadline in the ongoing election cycle, the deadline for requesting a mail ballot. The deadline for requesting a mail ballot is next Tuesday, October 28 at 5 pm.
Over 300 mail ballots have already been sent out to registered county voters and Jones says there are no changes to the mail ballot process from the year before. Those voting via mail ballot will need to have their ballot returned to the election office on or postmarked by election day, November 4.
On the ballot this year are city council and school board positions. For the Emporia City Commission, the candidates include Tyler Curtis, Kurt Steinkhuler, Tami Ogle, Monica Duncan, Travis Hitt, Aaron Larson, Denise Gilligan and write-in candidate Kenneth Gardner. Incumbents Susan Brinkman and Jamie Sauder will not seek another term.
As for the USD 253 Emporia Board of Education election, that race is already settled, barring a major write-in campaign, as incumbents Lillian Lingenfelter and Jami Reever will retain their seats and will be joined by newcomer Barb Fowler. Incumbent Jennifer Thomas has announced that she will not seek re-election. Lingenfelter, Reever and Thomas’ seats were the only ones up for election this year and Lingenfelter, Reever and Folwer were the only three candidates to file.
Jones will be back on KVOE’s airwaves with another election update on Monday at 7:20 am.
