The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is using a crash involving a vehicle and an elk as a way to highlight the proper way to handle such incidents.
Lyon County Game Warden Aaron Scheve says the crash happened on Interstate 35 about two miles east of Emporia on Wednesday. The driver of the vehicle that hit the elk drove off without stopping, but another driver came up to the scene and secured a salvage tag — issued for in-season dead game animals if people have proper licenses and are within legal limits. KDWP says antlers may not be cut off roadkill game or found skulls and then possessed by a person without a salvage tag.
Residents wanting salvage tags can get one from deputies or game wardens.
Archery season for elk continues until New Year’s Eve. Hunters will need a valid license, elk permit and permission from a landowner to hunt.
