The Kansas Department for Children and Families says correspondence from the federal government indicates there may not be enough money to pay full SNAP benefits for next month if the federal government shutdown continues.
DCF says a letter from the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service says the lapse in funding, a direct result of the ongoing shutdown, means agencies should hold off on processing November benefits until the federal government says otherwise. If there is no federal action by Oct. 28, whether through a full budget agreement or a short-term continuing resolution, the federal government will not distribute any SNAP benefits for November until a decision is made.
DCF says nearly 190,000 Kansas residents use SNAP benefits. Residents using SNAP should keep using October benefits as normal and should also continue meeting all program requirements.
DCF is also processing SNAP applications as usual. Residents needing SNAP benefits can apply online at dcf.ks.gov or stop by the Emporia service center at 1701 Wheeler.
