Emporia Fire responded to the downtown Emporia corridor for a reported gas leak late Wednesday morning.
Crews were called to Flint Hills Eyecare and Associates at 512 Commercial Street shortly after 10:20 am for a gas leak. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinglage says all occupants had evacuated the building upon their arrival.
Following a sweep of the building, no meter readings indicated any natural gas in the building; however, Steinlage says there was a faint odor of gas, leading them to speculate the cause may have been a malfunctioning water heater, however, which has not yet been confirmed. Kansas Gas was called in to further investigate and make any needed repairs.
No injuries were reported. Traffic from Sixth and Commercial was blocked to Fifth and Commercial for just over 20 minutes as crews investigated.
Further details are currently pending.
