Several federal agencies are banding together in an effort they say will strengthen the American beef industry.
USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy and Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler issued a joint statement Wednesday, saying they are committed to affordable protein while making sure ranchers have “a strong economic environment” for years.
The plan has three general goals. The first is strengthening domestic cattle production by reforming endangered species guidance, enhancing disaster relief, increasing grazing access and expanding access to capital and risk management options. Second is lowering long-term costs, increasing marketing options and promoting “clear, truthful information” about domestic beef. Third on the list is growing the domestic herd while bolstering both domestic and international demand.
The plan announced this week comes at a time when the United States has lost more than 17 percent of family farms since 2017 and national herd numbers are at their lowest levels in 75 years at a time when consumer demand is up almost 10 percent over the last 10 years. This also comes just days after President Trump announced a potential plan to import Argentinian beef as a way to reduce consumer prices. The plan has been roundly criticized by ranchers, livestock groups, beef-related businesses and certain lawmakers alike since it was announced Sunday.
