If you’re attending The People’s Budget Tour stop in Emporia next month — or any of the remaining seven tour stops across the state — you’re encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to help those in need.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is making a handful of tour stops, including one at the Lyon County History Center on Nov. 6. She is asking people attending that stop and others through Nov. 12 to donate non-perishable, non-glass items as part of a collaboration involving the Kansas Food Bank and Harvesters – The Community Food Network. Canned protein, infant formula, canned fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, dried beans and whole-grain pasta are among the requested items. Click here for a full list.
RSVPs are required for tour stops but do not guarantee space at different events. Click here for the RSVP link.
The governor says the tour is a way to get input on how taxpayer dollars are being spent and also to compare her budget to the one passed by the Republican Legislature earlier this session. Since before the budget was passed, the governor has said the Republican version leaves the state with anywhere between $300 million and $700 million more in expenditures than revenues “every year for the foreseeable future.” Republicans disagree, saying the governor’s budget spends too much money.
