Beef policy adjustments remain a concern for ranchers, beef-related businesses, livestock advocacy groups and lawmakers.
Kansas Second District Congressman Derek Schmidt says President Donald Trump’s idea of importing Argentinian beef as a way to lower consumer prices caught him by surprise when it was announced Oct. 19.
As part of his most recent visit on KVOE’s Morning Show, Schmidt echoed comments earlier in the week from Emporia Livestock Sales owner Brody Peak, Keith Cattle Company owner Brian Keith and Kansas Livestock Association Vice President Scarlett Madinger: Let the market correct itself.
The President’s suggestion on importing Argentinian beef came out just a few days before the US Department of Agriculture, US Department of the Interior, US Department of Health and Human Services and Small Business Administration issued a joint release announcing the Beef Industry Plan, which in general terms focuses on strengthening and increasing domestic cattle production while lowering long-term costs and, thus, prices in the meat aisle. Schmidt says there are some good points that can help Kansas producers.
Other aspects of the plan, like increasing access to public lands, will likely not affect Kansas producers much because Kansas doesn’t have a lot of public land available.
