Federal lawmakers representing Kansas continue to chime in in on the overall agriculture situation, if not the beef issue specifically, after President Donald Trump mentioned possible plans to import beef from Argentina last week as a way to make beef more affordable for consumers.
Senator Jerry Moran “resoundingly rejects” the idea of importing Argentinian beef.
Fellow Senator Roger Marshall says Argentinian beef imports aren’t as big of an issue as it may seem.
Marshall says this is a move with larger global implications.
Last week, Second District Congressman Derek Schmidt said he disagreed with the import plan and said markets needed time to correct themselves, echoing comments earlier in the week from Emporia Livestock Sales owner Brody Peak, Keith Cattle Company owner Brian Keith and Kansas Livestock Association Vice President Scarlett Madinger.
Both Moran and Marshall recently highlighted the USDA/Trump decision to resume Farm Service Agency core operations as the federal government shutdown approaches the one-month mark. Resuming FSA operations is important because it means access to farm loan processing, Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage insurance payments and other programs.
