This week, the United Way of the Flint Hills announced the formation of a Food Relief Rapid Response team and encouraged businesses and nonprofits to join nearly 20 entities already involved. The United Way is now asking the general public to help.
The United Way is asking residents to give money, either by texting GIVEUWFH to 44321 or by going online to unitedwayoftheflinthills.org/form/donate.
Residents can also donate prepared food boxes at The Salvation Army of Emporia, 327 Constitution. Residents can email info@uwfh.org to get the list of suggested items.
Meanwhile, the United Way has kept some operations hours as they were for Abundant Harvest Food Kitchen while expanding others.
The United Way is continuing hot meals from 4-4:30 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through the rest of the year.
Also, hand-out packaged food will be available at 8:30 am Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays as a baseline schedule. Service at 8:30 am Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be when food is available. This expands the food giveaway schedule, which had been at 8:30 am Mondays and Thursdays.
Abundant Harvest remains under short-term United Way oversight and city funding after the Rescue Mission Board decided to end its work with the food kitchen earlier this year. The United Way is still looking for an organization or collection of organizations to handle Abundant Harvest operations after New Year’s Eve.
