Three people suffered apparently minor injuries as part of a crash in west Emporia on Tuesday, including Lyon County’s Emergency Communications director.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened in the 2600 block of US Highway 50, or less than 1,000 feet east of the Industrial Road intersection. Troopers say an SUV driven by 49-year-old Cynthia Gehring was pulling out of a parking lot onto US-50 — right in front of an SUV driven by 49-year-old Brett Van Gundy of Emporia. The Van Gundy vehicle then hit the Gehring vehicle on the driver side.
Gehring, Van Gundy and Van Gundy’s wife, Emergency Communications Director Roxanne Van Gundy, were all taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment afterward.
Coincidentally, the crash happened on National First Responders Day, recognizing emergency responders like paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, law enforcement officers and emergency dispatchers.
