Halloween safety is always a concern, whether it involves candy after dark or foot traffic after sunset.
Emporia Fire Marshal Stephen Beemer says there are always concerns about costumes around open flames, although there is a gradual trend away from fire for Halloween.
Law enforcement and emergency responders have been worried about candy safety for decades. Both Beemer and Police Capt. Ray Mattas say there are some things for parents to keep in mind.
Mattas says parents need to make sure their trick-or-treaters are visible.
Mattas also says adults need to be mindful if they are celebrating without children nearby, especially when it comes to alcohol. The standard advice applies — if you plan to drink, have a designated driver or set up rides beforehand through a ride service business. If alcohol is not involved but vehicle traffic is, Mattas urges drivers to not be wearing masks because they immediately limit peripheral vision.
