Lyon County commissioners approved a new policy regarding compensation for exempt employees in disaster situations as part of their meeting Thursday.
Commissioners approved a premium pay policy in cases where Fair Labor Standards Act-exempt staff work 60 per hours in a given week and Lyon County receives a disaster designation. Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell, who made the presentation after working on details with Legal Counsel Molly Priest, says this is needed.
Exempt staff are not eligible for overtime under FLSA, so the policy would offer premium pay in these situations.
Payment would be at the overtime standard, 1.5-times current employee salary. There is also a section giving county commissioners some latitude to approve extra pay in case the county isn’t declared as a disaster area.
Fell says there haven’t been situations that could qualify recently, although the cleanup after the Reading tornado in 2011 would serve as an example that could.
Separately, commissioners approved over $295,000 in local matching funds for Lyon County Area Transportation’s fiscal 2027 administrative and operating funds as well as a $17,000 local match for a ramp-accessible minivan.
