A late surge gave the Lady Hornets a chance to steal a win but they couldn’t find the back in the net in a 0-0 tie at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. on Friday. Western handcuffed the E-State offense for most of the game outshooting the Lady Hornets 11-3 through the first 75 minutes, but ESU found a spark late thanks to a Western red card with less than 10 minutes to go. Emporia did their best to take advantage and overwhelmed Western with five shots in the span of seven minutes including a Megan Kephart shot that hit off the crossbar, but ESU couldn’t find the back of the net to steal a win. Mackenzi Goen picked up the shutout with five saves while defender Peyton Pipes logged 90 minutes and Abby Bachman played 85 minutes to assist on the back end. ESU (8-5-3, 5-2-3 MIAA) plays its final home match Sunday against Northwest Missouri. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the ESU Pitch.
