Indications are now pointing to two separate but connected crashes in north Lyon County early Friday.
Three vehicles were involved, with the situation reported just before 6 am near the junction of US Highway 56 and Road P-5. Emporia Fire says three people declined hospital trips afterward.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch tells KVOE News the overall incident apparently began when a box truck overturned for currently unlisted reasons, blocking both lanes of US-56 traffic in the process. A Good Samaritan parked his car some distance away in an effort to help, but the driver of a utility truck didn’t see the car and clipped it, sending it into a nearby ditch. The Kansas Highway Patrol is now leading the crash investigation.
US-56 is closed between Kansas Highway 99 and Road L until further notice, and Koelsch says it may be closed for a while Friday. The Kansas Department of Transportation is now directing traffic around the wreck site.
