Early indications about SNAP adjustments for the state of Kansas and its residents using those benefits are not promising, according to Kansas Appleseed.
The watchdog organization says guidance from the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Nutrition Service says states need to cut their maximum allotments in half. One-person and two-person families can expect to get the minimum monthly benefit. Kansas Appleseed says this will lead to “drastically lower” benefits for most Kansas, while some households may get few dollars or no benefits at all.
Meanwhile, state agencies must keep accepting and processing applications as long as the benefit reduction continues.
The Trump administration agreed to partial SNAP benefits after two federal judges ruled to that effect late last week. SNAP benefits are among the ongoing and developing impacts of the federal government shutdown, which has now lasted longer than any other in United States history and continues with no resolution in sight.
