Just in time for Veterans Day, Emporia’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7957 has been named as an All-American VFW Post.
Chaplain Gary Post says this is a rare feat. Less than 5 percent of the better than 6,600 VFW posts nationwide attain this honor for leadership, teamwork and accomplishment — both in programs and membership growth.
This is the first time Post 7957 has been so honored.
Among other community activities, Post 7957 has been active with the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests. Close to 70 entries are involved this fall. The post was also involved in organization and support for The Wall That Heals appearance in Emporia this past summer and has started a Beyond the Battlefield award to be announced at the annual Veterans Art Exhibition as part of Emporia’s All Veterans Tribute activities Friday evening.
Post members are thankful for ongoing participation in the Emporia Community Foundation’s annual Match Day fundraiser, giving the post funds to pay for flags on Lyon County veteran graves for Memorial Day, as well as community projects and prize money for the essay contests.
