The Emporia State women’s basketball team shot just 22 percent from the field in a 55-39 defeat to Wayne State College at the D2 Central Region Showcase at the St. Joseph Civic Arena on Friday. ESU used an 8-0 run to lead 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the Wildcats took the lead for good following a 21-5 run that included a 13-0 stretch. The Wildcats led 31-23 at the half and ESU never got closer than three scores in the second. ESU missed their last 13 3-pointers in the game to finish 1-for-14 from outside the arc and were just 3-for-21 from the field in the second half. Head coach MJ Baker said her team has plenty to work on.
Kaitlyn Sanders led ESU with 18 points. It was the first time that ESU had scored under 40 points since losing to UMKC in 1992. ESU returns to action Saturday facing Minnesota State-Moorhead at 4:00 p.m.
