Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells has named the deputies shot during a fatal shooting incident near Carbondale this past weekend.
Wells says Deputy Christian Moran, Corporal Clayton Hartpence and K-9 Deputy James Cason were the deputies that responded to a domestic violence call north of Carbondale, alongside Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Ellis. All four were hit by gunfire and taken to hospitals for treatment.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation had said one of the deputies had been released from Stormont-Vail Health as part of its latest update Saturday evening, while the other deputies were in good condition at that time. Wells has not clarified those situations in his update Monday evening, but he says the officers are all “receiving excellent care” but face lengthy recovery periods.
On Sunday, the Kansas State Troopers Association announced a monetary fund helping Ellis’ recovery and medical bills. On Monday, Wells announced two ways residents could help deputies:
*Residents can donate money to the Osage County Sheriff Support Fund, either dropping off or mailing payments to Lyndon State Bank
PO Box 518
817 Topeka Avenue
Lyndon Kansas 66451
*Residents can also drop off or mail items like gift cards and snacks to
Osage County Sheriff’s Office
PO Box 639
131 West 14th
Lyndon KS 66451
The suspect, 22-year-old Stephen McMillan, was killed at the scene. McMillan’s 77-year-old grandfather was hit by at least one bullet and hospitalized. There has been no update on his condition. The KBI continues its investigation.
