Chase County deputies have arrested a Strong City man for alleged drug activities — and also for having explosives inside his house.
Sheriff Jacob Welsh says the incident began unfolding around 7:15 am Thursday as deputies began handling a search warrant for illegal narcotics at 420 Walnut in Strong City. During the search, law enforcement found two hand grenades and at least one more piece of military ordnance inside the house.
After the alleged explosives were discovered, deputies reached out to the Riley County Police Department Bomb Squad and the Fort Riley Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit. One of the items was thought to have live ordnance and was secured by Fort Riley.
The resident, 58-year-old Gerald “Roy” Brown, was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana and methamphetamine, both with intent to distribute, as well as possessing unspecified opiates and drug paraphernalia. Brown was also arrested on suspicion of criminal use of an explosive and criminal use of weapons.
Welsh says an investigation continues. He also says there is no “ongoing threat to the public.”
Formal charges are currently pending.
