Organizers of Emporia’s Wreaths Across America event are having their final push towards covering Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery with wreaths next month.
Honor a Hero is taking place at the Lyon County Fairgrounds from 10 am to 2 pm Tuesday. Residents are encouraged to drive through the Fairgrounds, give their thanks to military veterans, law enforcement and emergency responders, as well as donate to the Wreaths Across America cause and/or sign up to volunteer for placing wreaths as part of the official event Dec. 13 or pick up wreaths in January.
Residents are asked to enter using the 12th Avenue entrance and drive south to the Wreaths Across America booth, which will be outside the Anderson Building, before continuing south past the grandstand and Extension Office to get to US Highway 50.
Locally, Wreaths Across America is working towards placing live wreaths on the gravesites of 2,333 veterans laid to rest at Maplewood Memorial Lawn. As of Sunday, just under 2,000 wreaths had been funded.
KVOE will have reports from Honor a Hero in the 10 am and 12 pm hours, as well as Talk of Emporia at 11:06 am.
