It’s time for turkey…and, if you’re a Lyon County resident, taxes.
Property taxes aren’t coming due just yet — that’s later this year — but the statements should be in hand after being mailed this past Friday. On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment this week, Lyon County Treasurer Sharon Gaede says the statements should be more user-friendly, thanks to a change in vendor.
Gaede says the change in vendor is giving residents some savings in the process, both with money and with time.
The benefit of the $2,000 financial savings is obvious, but Gaede says the quicker turnaround for the mailings is important as well because it gives residents more time to process their finances with the first payment deadline now less than a month away. Both property and real taxes can be paid in two halves or in full, and the deadline to do so is normally Dec. 20, but that due date is moving to Dec. 22 with the 20th on a Saturday this year. If residents don’t make a first-half payment next month, interest accrues with real estate taxes while the entire property tax amount becomes due with interest. The second-half payment is typically due by May 10, with interest added to both real estate and personal property tax payments if no payment is made, but that due date is moving to May 11, again because of the calendar.
To pay, mail your money to the Treasurer’s Office at the Lyon County Courthouse, Box 747, Emporia ZIP 66801, or use the dropbox outside the Courthouse. You can also pay online and in the office. If you plan to pay by phone, that option is not available next month. If you plan to pay by card, those payments need to be made before 4 pm weekdays.
