The Thanksgiving holiday weekend has the city of Emporia updating two notable infrastructure projects.
The most widespread project is the ongoing Southeast Transmission waterline work, eventually stretching from 12th and Garfield to South and Carter over the next year. There are several partial or total street closures underway now, including a 20-inch main installation along parts of West Seventh Avenue. Sanitary sewer is getting realigned near West, with water service line and intersection connections underway between Walnut and Neosho. The Walnut Street intersection also has newly-poured concrete, so that intersection should open next week. Paving at Seventh and Washington is expected over the next two weeks, weather permitting.
There is also an intensive work zone underway along Overlander Road between West Sixth and US Highway 50. A nearly-100-year-old bridge has removed and will ultimately be replaced as part of the work to expand Overlander from two lanes to three with curb, gutter and storm sewer. A water line has been bored under an existing gas pipeline and the aforementioned storm sewer installation process has started. Later, a 12-inch water main will be installed to serve Industrial Park II just west of Emporia.
