At least for now, our relatively mild fall has a taste of winter attached.
Light snowfall and winter-like temperatures, including lows in the teens for much of the upcoming week, mean a lot of furnaces turning on. Emporia Fire Marshal Stephen Beemer says this is the time to have furnaces checked — for a lot of reasons.
Beemer also says it’s good to know your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work at this time of year.
Beemer says the program letting firefighters install combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at no cost to residents has been quite popular. In fact, there has been a waiting list for a few weeks as the detectors are now in hand and getting installed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Residents who want a free detector can apply online at emporiaks.gov/getalarmed.
