Emporia High girls wrestling is coming off the best season in school history. Head Coach Shawn Russell saw the first two gold medals in program history. Kensley Medrano (120) and Alexa Castillo (235) each reached the top of the mountain in 5A.
Coach Russell understands his team won’t be able to sneak up on anyone.
Medrano is so excited for the team being ranked fifth in the preseason rankings.
Despite winning the title last year, she put in the work in the offseason.
Castillo will compete at 190 in her final year.
This class will bring a new challenge for her.
The Lady Spartans have three others in the preseason rankings. Sienna Spaulding (105), Chloe Steele (110), and Yaneli Carranza (145). Carranza is ranked fourth, while Spaulding and Steele each open the year in the sixth spot of their respective classes.
With five wrestlers in the initial rankings, Emporia earned a fifth-place team ranking in the 5A preseason poll. Coach Russell will be able to fill out all the weight classes with competitive wrestlers.
The black and red open at home on Saturday, December 6 with their own tournament.
