The state of Kansas is currently in the upper half of states with the lowest gas prices in the nation, with Lyon County being the second cheapest county in the state.
According to numbers from AAA Kansas, the state of Kansas, as of Tuesday, was ranked 13th in the nation at $2.66 per gallon. Lyon County currently boasts an average of $2.34 per gallon, with Emporia averaging between $2.19-$2.39 per gallon, making it the cheapest county in the local area, and second cheapest in the state behind only Dickinson County.
According to AAA Kansas Public and Government Affairs Manager Shawn Steward, the cheaper gas prices are common this time of year. Steward adds, there is not always a rhyme or reason to the fluctuation in prices; however, there are several factors that can play a role, including competitiveness among gas providers.
This includes the opening of a new gas station, like the Walmart station, which opened to the public in October.
As we have all seen in recent years, price increases are a common occurrence and KVOE News asked Steward if or when we may see a jump in prices at the pump. He says there are no signs indicating that a price increase is imminent anytime soon, noting it has been a fairly stable year within the crude oil market.
All other area counties, for the most part, are following suit, with Lyon County coming in well under the state average, with Chase County boasting the second lowest total among area counties at $2.35 per gallon. The highest total is Osage County, which is right at the state average of $2.66 per gallon.
